Fitting a flight cage for a dog

Flying a dog abroad: how to choose a flight cage for a dog or a carrier that suits it best and what criteria should be taken into account

Fitting a dog carrier

When selecting an airline cage for a dog, there are several factors to consider:

  1. The dog's weight.
  2. The dog's height and length.
  3. Whether we want the dog to fly with us in the passenger cabin.
  4. The requirements of the airline with which we are planning to fly.

Most airlines allow pets to fly in the passenger cabin if the dog's weight, including the carrier, does not exceed eight kilograms. Therefore, there is the option to fly a dog weighing up to seven kilograms in the passenger cabin.

If opting for this option, it is necessary to purchase a relatively lightweight carrier that fits the airline's requirements and, of course, the size of the dog.

Fabric Carrier vs. Plastic Carrier:

Fabric Carrier - Comfortable to carry, lightweight, fabric in size for the requirements of most airlines. However, it is not fabric for flying aggressive and unruly dogs, as it may tear.

Plastic Carrier - Safer and more comfortable for the animal than a fabric carrier, but less convenient to carry and does not meet the requirements of some airlines, as it does not fit under the seat.

When flying a dog in the cargo hold, it is necessary to purchase a plastic carrier that meets the size and quality standards of the airlines. Companies that produce sturdy airline cages accepted by all airlines are Ferplast and Petmate.

To ensure that the cage fits the dog's size, it should allow the dog to lie down, turn around comfortably, and avoid soiling if it relieves itself inside the cage.

Additionally, the cage floor should be made of sturdy material and constructed in a way that prevents liquids from escaping.

The carrier must undergo "acclimatization" for the flight in advance:

  • Drill 12 holes in the carrier for ventilation and attach zip ties before boarding the plane.
  • Mark the carrier with a Live Animal tag along with the owner's details.

Choosing a fabric carrier is of utmost importance. Selecting a carrier that does not meet the above requirements may cause discomfort to the animal and lead to the cancellation of its flight, as the carrier does not meet the airline's requirements.
